Caring for your furniture

Solid wood furniture is an investment that can last a lifetime with the correct care and treatment.

Furniture dos and don’ts

Always move furniture by lifting. Dragging or pushing furniture can cause fixings and joints to loosen this can affect the stability of your furniture.

Use placements, trivets, coasters and heat resistant mats for dishes and cups.  Table cloths are ideal for preventing scratches from everyday use.

Any spillages should be wiped up immediately.  Blot the spillage up, then use a damp not wet cloth on the furniture piece to remove any sticky residue and then wipe with a clean dry cloth.

Avoid using household polish and furniture sprays as these can leave a residue on your furniture.

Direct sunlight can cause fading on solid wood furniture.

Move display objects around occasionally to avoid uneven colour change.

When wood is exposed to extreme temperatures or humidity it can dry out and crack. The most common source of this in the home is the radiator.

Different treatment for different finishes

Lacquered Furniture

The easy care finish for furniture. Dust your furniture regularly with a lint free cloth, occasionally with a damp cloth, followed by a dry cloth to remove finger marks.

Oiled Furniture

To maintain the appearance of oiled furniture, use linseed or Danish oil. Never use detergents or abrasive products.

Danish oil nourishes feeds and protects your oak furniture. Danish oil provides a durable finish. Apply with a cloth. Follow the manufactures instructions on the product that you buy. Danish oil is a wood finishing oil, providing a satin finish. It is made from Tang oil or polymerized linseed oil. The oil will need to be re applied every 3 – 4 months. More often for highly used pieces such as dining tables.

Linseed oil leaves a shiny but not glossy finish on your furniture. Allows the natural grain of the wood too show through.

Applying oil to your furniture every 3-4 months will help prevent scratches and dents.
